I have only come lately to the delights of flower arranging. Forgive the pun but yes, I am a late bloomer. For many years, I thought that faffing around with flowers was an unneccessary indulgence. And as adamant as I was that it was an accomplishment more suited to the Victorian age, I am now a most fervent convert. There is something so supremely meditative about choosing what blooms will delight my senses the most and then the careful, or in my inexperienced case, the not so careful arranging in a suitable vessel.
I do realize that carnations have a humble reputation as being cheap and ubiquitous but, at $3.50 for a large bunch at the local flower shop, I didn't mind. And I found something quite charming in their pink frilly unpretentiousness.
And humble or not, a perfect bloom can elevate something quite simple and mundane to the level of the sublime.
Ordinarily, I am not the most serene of persons as I am easily flustered but the cool composure inherent in the silky petals makes me feel wonderfully serene and ladylike as I indulge in arranging and rearranging bouquets of flowers.
I admit now that, in this rough and tumble world, this particular accomplishment of the Chatelaine of the home to be a most worthy one indeed.

Your carnations are so sweet. I used to just plonk my flowers in a vase but they do look so much better with a little fluffing up.
I am trying to learn ways of re-arranging/re-wrapping supermarket flowers so they look better. Why do they have to package them in such awful wrapping?

I read somewhere that carnations were Princess Grace's favorite flower. It also happens to be my birth flower, and I love them! They may be a humble flower, but they come in gorgeous colors, last a long time, and are extremely versatile for decorating. We can't all be high-maintenance roses. Some of us are hardy, dependable (but beautiful) carnations.
Carnations are given a bad rap but they are pretty flowers -- inexpensive and last a long time. I'd rather have REAL carnations than silk anything else!!!!

It truly is a wonderful, meditative, rewarding occupation! I believe we take closer note of the beauty of the flowers while we arrange them. It is the simple things in life that make it all worth while!

I swear by grocery-store flowers! They are inexpensive enough to indulge weekly, and they add so much joy to the house!
How pretty -- I love carnations too and their delightful spicy scent. Pink is always a favorite of mine.
I'm with you all the way. I'm wild for fresh flowers. I think that the carnation got an undeserved bad reputation back in the 60's, when florists made cheap, ugly HUGE corsages out of horribly dyed carnations. They're actually quite hardy, they have a lovely aroma, and I like the texture of the ruffled petals. Thank you for sharing your charming design. Cherry Kay

Thank you so much for your kind comments on my blog about my wonderful cat Gibson . It really was on of the hardest decision- there does come a point where you have to weigh up the pain and discomfort they are in, and your wish to keep them with you at all costs.Ultimately, they should basically be comfortable at least and poor Gibson was really getting more and more ill with no chance of improvement.

Lovely photos. The ironstone plate is also pretty and funny enough I found 10 dessert/bread size in that same pattern yesterday at a thrift store for a steal.
